North Sumatra's capital of Medan is the western gateway to Indonesia. Facing the Malay peninsula across the Malacca Straits, North Sumatra is a land of great mountains, waterfalls, a vast lake, a mixture of cultural groups and plantations of rubber, tobacco, palm oil and coffee.
The most interesting destination is Lake Toba, situated in the centre of the mountain range. The Samosir Island in the Lake Toba is a centre of Batak culture, has several villages of historical interest.
An archaelogical interest is the islands of Nias, of the southern coast of North Sumatra. Still retaining some of its traditional from the megalithic culture, the people of Nias still live in some of their oldest village with ancient architecture.
